Seborrheic keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis is a benign (non cancerous) tumor found on the skin. Seborrheic keratoses are the most common benign tumor in older individuals. They usually appear as multiple small, flat or raised growths that range in color from white to black and are commonly found on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and hands. They usually do not cause symptoms, but occasionally can itch and rub or catch on clothing, causing irritation. Scratching seborrheic keratoses or trying to pick them off the skin can result in a secondary infection. The cause of seborrheic keratosis is not well understood; however, a combination of environmental factors, such as sun exposure and genetic factors may play a role. Treatment may not be needed depending on the size and location of the seborrheic keratoses. When treatment is desired, topically applied creams and acids and surgery may be considered.
